How we score

Role-aware comparisons for HVAC techs — not generic power-tool SEO. This page ships before any “best” pick goes live.

What we optimize for

Every page answers: for an HVAC truck / job type. We cross-link the rest of the stack. We do not drift into “best cordless impact” listicles without HVAC framing.

Scoring dimensions

Internal weights are tuned after the first research corpus. Readers see the rubric — not fake decimal precision.

DimensionWhat we look at
Job fitResidential service vs install vs light commercial; attic/roof carry; daily vs occasional use
Spec honestyClaims match manuals; A2L / refrigerant-class support documented and date-stamped
Durability / serviceabilityWarranty, parts availability, known failure modes, calibration path
Ecosystem costProbes, hoses, apps, oil, sensors over 2–3 years (ownership cost framing)
Field usabilityDisplay readability, hose routing, wireless reliability notes, case quality
Safety / compliance postureWarnings respected; we never score “easier illegal shortcuts”

How picks are labeled

  • Best overall — highest composite for the common residential / light-commercial tech, with stated assumptions
  • Best budget — meets must-have safety/compatibility bars; tradeoffs named
  • Best for X specialty — e.g. A2L day-one kit, install-heavy vacuum duty, service-only probe kit
  • Runner-up / skip if — honest negatives; who should not buy

Anti-listicle rules

  1. No page ships without a filled spec table and at least one primary-doc citation per recommended class.
  2. Stars / “Amazon’s Choice” never substitute for rubric scores.
  3. Affiliate disclosure near every recommendation cluster.
  4. Update log on methodology and each comparison; live revises use ?r=N cache-bust.
  5. If research is incomplete → Researching — picks coming, not a fake winner.

Evidence we use

  • Manufacturer spec sheets, operator manuals, warranty PDFs
  • Published A2L / mildly flammable compatibility statements (quoted and dated)
  • Field signals (forums, teardowns) as hypothesis generators — corroborated against primary docs before pick rationale
We do not invent longevity hours, “we tested 47 units” without a real protocol, or commission rates in on-site copy.

Compliance framing

  • EPA Section 608: study-aid framing for courses; link official sources for requirements. Not legal advice.
  • A2L content: informational + manufacturer docs. No DIY conversion or charging procedures.
  • Safety: informational only. Defer procedures to licensed practice and labeled instructions.
